Is It Ever Safe To Be You?- A Psychological Lens

Dr Michelle Hunter-Hill’s contribution to the conversation explored what may be happening beneath the behaviour when Black women navigate the demands of work, family and wider society. Drawing on occupational psychology, the BENEATH Model™, psychological safety, nervous-system responses, psychodynamic thinking, resilience and self-awareness, Dr Hunter-Hill considered how safety is contextual and “you” is individual. The session explored how the question “Is it safe to be myself here?” can influence stress, self-expression and the ways we adapt or protect ourselves, particularly where professional or reputational consequences may be at stake. The invitation was to move beyond simply judging behaviour towards understanding what may sit beneath it—and, through greater self-knowledge, to create more choice about what we keep, what we put down and how we choose to show up.
